Katri Hämeen-Anttila has been appointed Professor of Social Pharmacy, especially Pharmaceutical Policy from 1st September 2022 at the School of Pharmacy, University of Eastern Finland. Previously, she was working in the Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea) and was involved in the implementation programme for rational pharmacotherapy – which is a basis to ongoing reform of pharmaceutical matters. Katri Hämeen-Anttila has been responsible for the preparation of the first national medicine information strategy and the establishment of the Medicines Information Network. Professor Hämeen-Anttila is a member of the UEF’s Effectiveness of Social and Health Services (EFFECTIVENESS) Research Community.
Katri’s research themes include in particular pharmacy services, including medication counselling, rational pharmacotherapy and patients’ involvement in the pharmacotherapy process. The pharmaceutical policy research involves close cooperation with Fimea, Kela and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. “The generic substitution of biological medicines in pharmacies, that is being prepared, can contribute to closer cooperation between community pharmacies and health care”, she says.
“One of the key objectives of pharmaceutical policy is to increase the patient’s involvement in their own care, both in Finland and internationally”, explains Katri her current research interest. “In order to increase the involvement of patients in research, it requires research organizations to take actions to create structures to support their participation. In order to be genuinely involved and take a stand on in the different phases of research and its planning, patients also need training. Patient organizations are also important partners, but they cannot respond to the needs alone”, Katri explains.
“It is great that Neurocenter Finland works as a bridge builder between research and patient organizations. Kuopio Brain & Mind Network has actively promoted interdisciplinary networking within our campus,” she says.
