Professor of Pharmacology and Drug Development Timo Myöhänen returned back to University of Eastern Finland in autumn 2021. His career has led him from UEF, where he did his master’s degree, to University of Helsinki, University of Antwerb, Georgetown University and University of Turku. UEF Neurodegeneration research group led by Timo focuses on studying the mechanisms and drug targets in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, aiming to develop a disease-modifying therapy. Timo is also a member of Neuropharmacology and Drug Targets Consortium (NDTC).
“Our long-term research topic has been PREP enzyme and targeting on it with small-molecular compounds. Moreover, based on our PREP research we have found similar multitargeting drug targets, and are currently opening novel research lines. We are currently heading towards commercialization of research”, describes Timo. “All parties will benefit from the collaboration of a multidisciplinary network and for this the University of Eastern Finland offers excellent opportunities”, sums Timo his thoughts.
