M.Sc., Molecular Biologist Joose Raivo is responsible for the daily operation of the Gene Diagnostic Laboratory in Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Eastern Finland. The accredited testing laboratory (SFS-EN ISO 15189:2013) belongs to the Diabetes and Heart Diseases Research Unit headed by Professor Markku Laakso and is a key part of the Genome Center of Eastern Finland.
“The Genome Center of Eastern Finland offers genotyping, DNA and RNA sequencing and bioinformation as a service, collaborates widely with the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio University Hospital and local companies”, explains Joose. The Genome Center of Eastern Finland is led by Professor Mikko Hiltunen.
The Gene Diagnostic Laboratory in Internal Medicine performs gene diagnostics for major monogenic diseases as well as pharmacogenomics to assess efficacy and side effects of various drug therapies. Cooperation has been close, particularly with clinical pathology. “At the moment, we are engaged in an active discussion with the neuroscientists at the University of Eastern Finland concerning closer cooperation in terms of competence and research infrastructure,” explains Joose.
“My tasks include the development of laboratory operations and methods, quality management, participation in the implementation of service research, preparation of offers, management of customer projects, contact with customers and partners”, lists Joose.
